In school, on the job or in your church, there are many different ways to help yourself and your friends to get involved with global healthcare. Here are just a few ideas:
At Your School Organize an education day centered on healthcare issues in one region of the world, such as Africa, Latin America or Asia. Use the event to raise awareness of critical healthcare challenges, particularly the disparity among healthcare resources in different parts of the world. If you and your friends focus on AIDS, you can schedule your event on December 1, which every year is World AIDS Day, and join millions of people around the world in highlighting the world’s joint efforts against the pandemic.
At Your Workplace Workplace colleagues are often eager to join together in addressing global healthcare needs. Consider adopting a mission in another part of the world, and then committing yourselves to raise funds in support. Support does not always need to be monetary. One organization ships used bicycles to far-flung missions in Africa. Another organization ships wheelchairs to needy regions. Still another organization brings together U.S.-based doctors and nurses for annual health missions to the Philippines. At Your Church Church communities are excellent settings where you can combine information and education with fund-raising. Consider organizing a global healthcare day at your local parish to educate parishioners of all ages about the need for medicines and medical supplies around the world.
